Why Players Work With Me

No One-Size-Fits-All
Path to Improvement.

I’ve experienced basketball across multiple levels — junior college, NCAA, international competition, college coaching, and player development. That journey taught me one thing: there is no one-size-fits-all path to improvement.

I help players become better shooters — and better humans — through coaching that adapts to age, skill level, learning style, time of year, goals, and individual movement solutions.

James Healy

James Healy is the founder of Healy Hoops, a basketball training business focused on private shot development and holistic player improvement. With experience as both a collegiate/international player and an NCAA coach, James combines advanced shooting concepts, skill-acquisition principles, and individualized coaching to help athletes improve in ways that transfer directly to games.

After his collegiate playing career, James spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Chadron State College (NCAA Division II), helping guide the program to its best conference finish in seven years while earning his MBA. Most recently he served as an assistant coach at the University of St. Thomas (Houston) during the 2025–26 season, working in player development with one of the top NCAA Division III programs in the country.

As a player, James was a two-year captain and starter at New Mexico Highlands University, leading the team in three-pointers made while shooting 40.3% from three and 92.9% from the line. Internationally, he competed in China and Armenia — including games against the Qatar National Team, the Lithuanian National Team, and the Bayi Rockets of the Chinese Basketball Association.

"Great shooting isn’t one mechanic. It’s movement efficiency, rhythm, timing, perception, decision-making, confidence, and adaptability — built around how each athlete actually moves."

An NCAA Division III starter at the University of St. Thomas Houston came in shooting under 20% from deep. Ten months of consistent, intentional work later, he finished 8th in the SCAC conference from beyond the arc on his way to the Elite 8.

The Player

A freshman starter on an NCAA Tournament team, named All-Freshman the prior season. Elite defender, dynamic athlete, natural playmaker. The one gap holding the rest of his offensive game back was his shot from three.

The Work

Ten months of 1-on-1 shot development. He never had to be chased into the gym — he came every day. Each session was built around his mechanics, rhythm, and decision-making, then progressively challenged with game-speed reps designed to transfer directly into competition.

The Result

3-point percentage climbed from 17% on 60 attempts to 41% on 91 attempts — a jump in both volume and efficiency in a single college season, on a team that ran to the NCAA Division III Elite 8.

Core Philosophy

Holistic Shot
Development.

My approach goes beyond changing mechanics. Great shooting is a combination of movement efficiency, rhythm, timing, perception, decision-making, confidence, adaptability, and understanding — and every athlete moves, learns, and processes information differently. So I don’t coach with rigid one-size-fits-all systems.

My goal is to help players understand the why behind the work, develop efficient and repeatable movement solutions, build confidence and self-awareness, learn to self-correct, and improve game transfer under pressure — becoming adaptable shooters instead of robotic ones.

How I Train

  • Intentional training over random reps
  • Constraints-led, game-transfer drills
  • Skill-acquisition principles & adaptable learning
  • Rhythm, sequencing, balance, connection, energy transfer
  • Decision-making integrated into every workout
  • Holistic development on and off the court

What Sets Me Apart

  • Teach the why behind the work
  • Coaching adapted to the individual
  • Deep understanding of shooting development
  • Constantly evolving to serve players better
  • College coaching + international playing perspective
  • Long-term development — no shortcuts
